From the Chicago Tribune:

Why women make better runners than men

Runners-aStatistically, it's sad but true: Women run 10 percent slower than men at all distances.

But women are actually better suited for the sport than their male counterparts, Amby Burfoot argues in a revised and updated edition of the "Runner's World Complete Book of Running."

Women tend to pace themselves better at longer distances; studies show men, perhaps fueled by testosterone, go out too hard, too soon and end up bonking more often than women. But a man's real obstacle is his notion of competition, Burfoot said.

"Men think sports are about beating the other guy. That may be true in boxing, but it's not true in running," said Burfoot, a Runner's World editor-at-large and winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon. "Runners must learn to compete with themselves and not against anyone else. Women seem to find it easier to understand that running is its own reward. ... It's not a matter of what you can do to an opponent; it's a matter of what running does for you."
